Our charity for 2017: Marlow Sports Club

In 2017 we will be raising money for Marlow Sports Club, which is the base location for the Red Kite Ride.

Marlow Sports Club was formed in 1949 when the local Wethered Brewery agreed to lease land for sports, thereby allowing the fledgling club to pull together a number of different organisations including the local tennis, cricket and hockey clubs.

In 2006 Whitbread, who then owned the site, planned to sell it off for housing. The club decided to fight to preserve it as a local sporting hub for the community. The club is now a registered charity with the aim of providing sporting and recreational facilities for the people of Marlow and the surrounding area.

Since then the club has expanded, adding a new all-weather hockey pitch and additional sports clubs who use it as their base, including Marlow Riders. In 2013 the club were able to purchase a further 10 acres adjacent to the existing site, all of which are now safe from potential inappropriate development and reserved for the recreational use of the local community.

To open up the club to future members and additional sports, and to safeguard its long-term future, the club now needs to develop the new land and above all to replace the dilapidated club-house, for example it fails to provide decent changing facilities for it’s 800 female participants. Plans have been submitted for a new clubhouse that will provide space for all the various clubs including allowing access for wheelchairs and expanded changing facilities for women as well as men and the 1400 youngsters. All funds raised from the Red Kite Ride this year will go to this charity for the benefit of the whole community.
